New Artist Spotlight: Beatnik Neon Bends the Rules of Both Classical and EDM [Video]

The dual classical and modern elements of production and composition duo Beatnik Neon’s work are so well-integrated that it’s difficult to discern just how each of their tracks are actually produced and composed. At times it seems tracks like “Light Processing” featuring vocalist Bel Ronin of their latest EP Interstice are working off a classical-style score, while other recent works sound like “Blissfall,” released earlier this year, lands more in the EDM/bass music composition wheelhouse. Still others follow more rock/pop structure.

It’s quite rare for an artist to have theory nerds baffled in such a way, but with Beatnik Neon’s creedo of making music without limits, it seems that’s what they’re going for. They just also happen to be talented enough to pull it off. With very little background information to go on other than their actual tracks, one can really only go on sound design and their own minimal thoughts about the project:

Beatnik Neon was unintentionally created with sonic freedom. We love big drums, heavy clean bass and synth with roots from classical instrumentation and a final touch given by one of our vocal contributors make Beatnik Neon an ever evolving project with no limits.

So to that end, the sound design coming from the duo, comprised of Nolan Farmer and Yann Marc, is pretty much flawless. The ambient work here is easily experimental/drum & bass quality (though not tempo), while the afore-mentioned “big drums, heavy, clean bass and synth” which has become a staple in Beatnik Neon’s sound is also top quality, both technically and in the emotions they connote. It’s clear that the duo make their own sounds as well, because once again the line are blurred in terms of technique: it’s impossible to tell what’s digitally manufactured and what’s analog, especially when it comes to the drums.

The classical elements blended into all the sound design and electronic base are done so seamlessly that is also speaks to Farmer and Marc’s production abilities once again, but what we can also glean is someone in that duo is also classically trained, if not both. Whether some of the string elements in tracks like the industrial/movie score-inspired “New Dawn” featuring Germaine LeFevre or the guitar in the halftime “Calm” featuring Luna Bands or “Numb” featuring Vivian Moon are analog or digital is once again a mystery due to the sound design around them, but they are nonetheless beautifully composed. Paired with the skilled piano playing and operatic vocals from LeFevre, it’s clear someone knows their stuff.

Speaking of vocals, almost all of Beatnik Neon’s tracks have a vocal collaboration , and said collaborators are almost as varied as the skills and techniques contained in the music. From Bel Ronin’s eerie, sharp timbre in multiple tracks to Bands’s more pop style in “Calm” to another classically trained, albeit more musical-inspired vocal set from Christine Nicole in the duo’s 2020 album Yorself, Beatnik Neon don’t just use their vocalists for accompaniment. They all lend their own style and tones to each track and contribute to that genre-bending diversity Nolan and Marc feel are integral to this project.

If all that weren’t enough, there’s a strong visual element to much of Beatnik Neon’s work, and it seems to be getting stronger. Their track art is laced with the same elements of dark, mildly industrial elements with imagery of the highest quality. Their track teasers and newer music videos on YouTube also have breathtaking cinematic quality and tell the stories of these songs in a way that makes one wonder if this duo missed their calling as score composers for films.

Hardly technically “new,” Beatnik Neon is a project that really should have been much more recognized for their incredible work lo these past five years, since they first released their debut EP, Atramentous Part I: In Darkness Reeling in 2016. Now with even more of a solid sound design, production and compositional base and literal Tsuruda-or even-Alix Perez-level quality, here’s hoping Beatnik Neon catch on in all the genres they so masterfully blend into their work.

The Intersticie EP is out now and available to stream on Spotify or to purchase on Bandcamp along with the rest of Beatnik Neon’s discography. Check out their chilling music videos and visualizers on their YouTube channel.

Feed Me Shares Lead Single “Reckless” Off Upcoming Self-Titled Album Out This Friday

Feed Me’s discography is vast, from his 2011 breakout Feed Me’s Big Adventure to his latest album, High Street Creeps, released in 2019. Between five albums, five EPs, and dozens of singles in between, Feed Me has become a singular figure in the electronic music scene and he’s looking to do something big this coming Friday.

Feed Me, the self-titled album, is due out Friday, August 13. And after five albums, a self-titled definitely carries some weight to it. Reemerging for his first release of the year, he returned last week with the lead single off the album. The single, “Reckless,” features frequent collaborator, South African singer-songwriter Tasha Baxter on vocals. The two have paired up on some of his best songs to date, including “Cloudburn,” “Strange Behavior,” and “Ebb & Flow.”

“Reckless” presents a bit differently from Feed Me’s typical sound as it takes listeners through a captivating journey from beginning to end, a futuristic synth-pop masterpiece, rife with colorful and textured synths. Tasha Baxter’s spacious and emotive vocals drive the track into an engaging and novel soundscape. Paired with Feed Me’s masterful production, listeners are primed to be taken to a euphoric world, full of beautiful instrumentation. Alesso & Marshmello Tease New Collaboration With James Bay Out Soon

Superstar collaborations are a dime a dozen in the electronic dance world, but that doesn’t mean that particular ones don’t still pique our interest. According to a post on Reddit, a user received an email from Alesso teasing a collaboration with Marshmello, and another artist who appears to be James Bay, due out August 20.

Alesso and Marshmello belong to the same management group, The Shalizi Group, which also manages a number of other artists including Getter, Jauz, and Slushii. It was only a matter of time before the these two were put together on the same track.

“Just like magic, the stars will align…” reads the caption on the email before the supposed release date, ten days from now.

Comments on the Reddit post are hesitant to believe whether this will be a “cheap pop song” or something more grand, but both artists have surprised before with impressive productions so there’s no sense judging a book by its cover in this case.

Check back soon for any previews or in ten days when the song is predicted to drop.

Thomas Xavier Returns With Some Serious Groove on ‘Make That Kitty Purr’

Having experienced the first 2 singles off of Pussy On A Pedestal EP, his junior G-House track “Make That Kitty Purr (Feat. Erika Love),” may just be the most exhilarating sound off of this single by single mission Thomas Xavier is currently on. The power is potent and the sensual vigor unavoidable, “Make That Kitty Purr (Feat. Erika Love),” pops off with a desirable juiciness. The more Thomas Xavier maintains his active nature when it comes to his music released, the more it’s evident he gets signed, plays shows, and rises on streaming platforms. The success is a validating sign that the music is a fit with the scene it’s being exposed to.

50,000 streams already surround “Ballin’,” and “Can’t Stop Me,” the first two songs released at the start of summer and impacting so many. On the subject of streams, he’s now passed 100,000 streams mark since kicking off original music earlier this year.

July 3rd BIJOU had 2 opening spots for the DJ/producer to step in to handle. July 23rd, Thomas Xavier joined Slander, NGHTMRE, and black a.m. in Las Vegas for a banger of an event. August 12th he will perform before Golf Clap and an Orlando show date is in discussions.

Thomas Xavier capitalizes on his success by keeping the music coming, if you’ve been missing him, don’t let that habit fester any longer.

IMANU Falls 3m Off Stage At Festival, Expected To Make Full Recovery

Festivals are supposed to be a place to let all emotions loose and experience life at its fullest; sometimes, however, nature has a different plan. At Let It Roll in Czechoslovakia this past weekend, IMANU was performing when storms forced the festival to temporarily shut down (a standard safety protocol). Unfortunately, the DJ somehow ended up falling off stage at a height of 3 meters (approximately 10 feet) and ended up in the hospital.

He says in the Instagram post that he passed out twice before finally heading to the hospital, implying that he attempted to remain conscious for a bit before acquiescing that his condition warranted the trip.

Thankfully, he says that the x-rays show nothing is broken, “even though I’m in quite some pain,” but he still manages to crack a smile. From the sounds of it, he’s likely to make a full recovery and get back on the road soon! Though his tour manager might suggest a harness on his rider from now on…

Mat Zo Apologizes, Draws Massive Criticism For Anti-BTS, Asian-Directed Tweets

Some things are better kept to yourself and not shared publicly on Twitter, and Mat Zo learned that yesterday when he began tweeting out criticisms of massive Korean pop band, BTS. After calling the band “niche in the west,” despite having a hefty fan base in the US, he continued to say that the fans on social media seemed “suspicious” and he said there was a “fake vibe” to it all.

Many fans and supporters of the band took offense to his statements, calling them racist and he issued a bland apology. He gave the usual “while I never intended to hurt or offend anyone” spiel, and said he would be “stepping away from social media” in order to reflect on his actions.

— Mat Zo (@Mat_Zo) August 7, 2021

The original tweets have been deleted but you can see what he said below.

Boy you deluded, I’m in med school and even some of my teachers are BTS army, not to mention every other person in college …. And about the BTS meal? Lol I couldn’t order it the first night and the very next day IT GOT SOLD OUT!!! Bots????? Lmfaooo DELULU https://t.co/flte8cuxO0 pic.twitter.com/EgQ2rWYXx0

— (@Ot7Justinbiebzz) August 8, 2021

Of course, it didn’t end there as users began looking up old tweets from Mat Zo and found many more examples of racist, fetishizing, and offensive tweets from the artist.

And this pic.twitter.com/I5YXyauIRp

— daria•Btslingo⁷ (@Btslingo7) August 7, 2021

Dabin, an Asian-Canadian DJ, offered his own sentiments on the situation, saying it “really sucked seeing a producer I have so much respect for undervalue Korean music like that.”

really sucked seeing a producer I have so much respect for undervalue Korean music like that. Kpop fans aren’t bots, they’re the ones filling out stadiums for acts like BTS. Just because you think it’s “niche” doesn’t mean the fans and support aren’t real https://t.co/ZxGBp4Zr7Q

— DABIN (@iamdabinlee) August 7, 2021

Ultimately, as Mat Zo has apparently “left” social media for a bit, there’s not much more than fans can do on that side to engage or even try to educate him on the matter, but we’ll see what the situation is like whenever he chooses to re-enter the world electronically.
