Musicians’ Union Calls For Zero Tolerance Policy Against Sexual Misconduct

The music industry has been undergoing its own #MeToo moment over the past couple years, beginning most notably in the EDM world with the ousting of Datsik from his management, booking agency, and more after multiple accusations of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct were levied by multiple women. In the time since, there have been many more producers or industry representatives who’ve been accused of inappropriate conduct, including but not limited to sexual harassment and rape.

In the UK, the Musicians’ Union fights for artists’ rights, including fair and equitable pay, as well as “actively oppose all forms of harassment, prejudice and unfair discrimination whether on the grounds of sex, race, ethnic or national origin, religion, colour, class, caring responsibilities, marital status, sexuality, disability, age, or other status or personal characteristic.”

A new post on their website from this past Friday introduces the hashtag #ThisIsNotWorking, with a call to end abuse in the industry as well as Government organizations to step in and provide workplace protections. It also includes testimonials from some women about the harassment and/or abuse they’ve experienced.

Naomi Pohl, Deputy General Secretary of the MU, says:

“It’s unacceptable that so many artists, musicians, employees, and freelancers have suffered abuse at work and that many have left the industry as a result. With more women stepping forward to share their experiences, it’s vital the industry adopts a zero-tolerance approach to ensure everyone in the creative arts is protected as they return to work.

“We’re pleased to see the Government is recognising the seriousness of this issue after having recently convened a series of important creative industries-wide meetings to ensure positive action is implemented. Now we ask for action: we need the Government to strengthen the law to prevent sexual harassment at work before it happens.

“Together, with survivors, and other trade bodies like UK Music who are committed to ensuring change happens, we want to create a movement to ensure the music industry is a safe place to work for everyone.”

According to MU, in a poll taken prior to the pandemic, 48% of musicians have experienced some form of sexual harassment at work and 58% had witnessed an incident of sexual harassment whilst at work. No amount of sexual harassment is acceptable, but these numbers are deeply troubling.

The MU is calling on the public to sign up for free to its Supporter programme to become part of the movement to protect musicians in the workplace and add weight to its demand of the government. Hopefully a similar organization in the US can form to combat our own workplace sexual misconduct.

Elements Festival Attendees Sound Off on Social Media, Comparing Event to Fyre Festival

Elements Music & Arts Festival is making headlines after inclement weather and various other issues challenged the experience, which some are calling a “logistical nightmare,” “disorganized,” and “unsafe” –comparable to Fyre Festival.

In its fourth year, the “rain or shine” event was set to take place over September 3 – 6 in the secluded area of Lakewood, Pennsylvania. However, storms caused by Hurricane Ida reportedly held up transportation methods and wait times into the campgrounds ran up to 16 hours.

A local source says Elements festival oversold tickets, resulting in an increase in attendance that was not properly planned for. Festive Owl also notes there were several “major issues” that stretched beyond the weather.

Campgrounds were overflowing, cars were stuck in the mud — and at one point, reportedly, no food or water was available on site. More accounts are detailed here via Elements Shit Show 2021, a public group on Facebook with 3.8K members.

According to buzz on social media, disgruntled attendees are planning a lawsuit against Elements Festival.

On the flip side, other festival goers say Elements’ production was on point and fun was had by many despite the festival’s downfalls. While coming and going from the event proved to be difficult, the music and people made for a memorable experience.

Read the conversation below.

Elements Festival — I stepped away for a few days after the insanity of last week, but coming back to some absolute horror stories this weekend including 16 hour waits to access camping that was full, cars completely stuck in mud from Ida’s rains + much more.

In more EDM news, attendees are now planning a lawsuit against Elements Festival for waiting over 16+ hours to get into camping.

— Katie LL (@bassbutterflyyy) September 4, 2021

There’s a minor Fyre situation happening at the Elements music festival in PA this weekend. Between poor logistics + damage from Ida + oversold tickets + covid issues…things are not going well.

— Alex Mizrahi (@alexmiz) September 4, 2021

Worst festival I’ve ever had the misfortune of spending money on

— LASER_RANDY (@1900LAWYERS) September 5, 2021

Most of the experiences you’ve read are not exaggerated at all. They sent hundreds of people in circles during ingress, waited in lines for 10+ hours, camping was bursting at the seams. The only good thing I can say was that production was fantastic lmfao

— nor. was banned (@grooovynor) September 5, 2021

The only reason elements festival wasn’t a complete fyre festival experience was because once you got in the line was almost worth it. The music activities and people were awesome. But getting in and leaving were nightmarish

— Saliana (@salianaaa) September 6, 2021

Elements Festival was a complete shit show logistically however the DJs threw down and brought the fuckin music

Review: Nearly Four Years Later, Dylan Tauber Releases Follow-Up to His Seminal ‘Sounds from Space’ LP [Video]

Your EDM discovered Dylan Tauber in 2017 with the release of his Sounds from Space and Dolphin Trance 2 albums. Though it was nearly four years ago when they were released, the two ambient/trance/IDM albums are nonetheless memorable for their expertly crafted sound design and esoteric vibes. Now the follow-up to Sounds from Space, Sounds from Space 2 serves to remind fans why Tauber’s work makes such a lasting impact.

The gaps in Tauber’s discography are technically justified by the quality of his musical output, but the fact that he’s also well known in the visual art, literature and travel worlds paint a bigger picture. A true renaissance artist, Tauber spent at least part of that four years releasing written works and exhibiting his photography. That said, it’s clear the 14-track Sounds from Space 2 was a time-consuming labor of love.

Rather than being a continuation of Sounds from Space, this album, released in July, could also be called More Sounds from Space. It picks up where the last album left off but doesn’t seek to duplicate the original. Largely beatless in contrast to the consistent beat maintained throughout the first Sounds from Space, this 2.0 is focused much more on sound design and the ambient space of each track. The music contained in said tracks also seems to be largely in major keys and generally more uplifting. Though tracks like “Ambience of India” and “Planet X” still have a hint of that eerie flavor that was so prevalent in the first Sounds of Space, Tauber seems to have abandoned the more low-vibe gothic tones for something a bit more transcendent.

Tauber has always been good about bridging the gap between experimental electronica and EDM, so the tracks that do have a beat could easily slide into any festival set in the world. “Heavenly” and “Lone Satellite” allow  brassy trap beats to carry the high pitched, cinematic synths and ambient work. “Indian Ocean” conjures esoteric, early 2000s trip hop vibes while “Deep” and “Piano Ambience” are basically progressive trance. There’s a bit of something for everyone on this album, from experimental to hip hop.

Dylan Tauber’s releases may sometimes be far between, but with the depth and complexity contained therein, they’re certainly not few. Each release is a full, cohesive album heavy on the sound design but light and fun to listen to. Sounds from Space 2 is no exception, and will likely draw in a new audience while Tauber continues to impress his current fans.

Sounds from Space 2 is out now and can be streamed on Spotify. Visit his YouTube page for more videos, including some of his photographic and cinematic work.

Julian Jordan Plays Out “Final” Version Of New Collab With Martin Garrix & Tinie Tempah [WATCH]

Last week, we reported that Martin Garrix had played out two new unreleased songs at his first festival back, Electric Love in Austria. This past Saturday, Julian Jordan headlined Avalon in Los Angeles, where he played out the “finished” version of his collaboration with Martin and Tinie Tempah.

Compared to literally any of his songs over the past couple of years — “Drown,” “Higher Ground,” “Fire,” “Pressure,” etc. — this is certainly one of the hardest songs that Garrix has produced. And we’re 100% here for it.

So far it’s still untitled, at least publicly, but we’re extremely excited for this one to drop. Check it out below!

DJ Snake Teams With Hublot To Design Incredibly Exclusive, Incredibly Expensive Watch

About two months ago, Your EDM reported that Steve Aoki had teamed up with Bulgari to design a watch “made for raves.” At that time, the $3,000 price tag definitely took us by surprise. But, now DJ Snake has teamed up with Hublot for his own watch design — and while it’s not made for raves, per se, the nearly $30,000 price tag is still something to balk at.

According to Wrist Enthusiast, the watch case is an iridescent polished titanium with enough personality that you might actually mistake this watch for DJ Snake himself — it helps that his name is smack dab on the face of the watch, too.

“To be able to wear – and also offer my fans – a watch which reflects my personality is something that has been very important to me since the start of my partnership with Hublot,” DJ Snake said of the partnership. “I am delighted to have been able to combine my inspiration with the expertise of the fantastic watchmakers and technicians at this Swiss brand.”

Only 100 watches will be made, making it a true exclusive. But with a price of $26,200, it’s hard to say how quickly they’ll fly off the shelves regardless.

You can read more about the watch on Hublot’s website here.
