Swedish House Mafia x The Weeknd Collaboration Confirmed

Swedish House Mafia x The Weeknd is happening…

With the return of Swedish House Mafia has come instant classic singles “It Gets Better” and “Lifetime” with Ty Dolla $ign & 070 Shake, and a full album expected later this year. Understandably so, there’s much excitement surrounding what’s next.

Last night, Swedish House Mafia took the stage at the 2021 MTV VMAs. After playing out both recent singles, the group shared a preview of what’s to come — a collab with The Weeknd. The same clip has echoed massive response on social media, amassing millions of views within 24 hours.

During a recent episode of The Weeknd’s show Memento Mori on Apple Music, he played out a powerful mix of music that sparked the new Dawn era and cited Swedish House Mafia as a major inspiration for his forthcoming album.

As it turns out, all of the rumors and speculation of a high profile collab between Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd were true. Every little inkling has led up to this moment — the grand reveal.

‘Resetting The Dancefloor’ Initiative Fights for More Inclusive Music Communities

Ballantine’s True Music initiative is calling on the music industry to fight discrimination in an effort referred to as Resetting The Dancefloor.

According to the brand’s research, one in three music lovers have experienced discrimination firsthand, while 84% have witnessed it happen on the dancefloor.

In addition, 72% will only attend events that are safe and inclusive when nightlife reopens and 63% are more likely to consider whether a lineup is diverse (compared to a year ago).

Ballantine’s may be known for its whisky, but it also pushes for diverse talent among music communities through it’s True Music platform. In a new short film, they call on fans, artists and music industry professionals to work together to cultivate a more diverse scene.

Featured in the video below are advocates of this change including Berlin’s Honey Dijon, SBTV founder Jamal Edwards MBE, events and label collective HE.SHE.THEY, Madrid-based collective Chica Gang, Brazilian LGBTQIA+ collective Afrobapho, and South African musician Dope Saint Jude.

Ballantine’s shares of its Resetting The Dancefloor movement:

We believe in championing diverse talent and underrepresented music communities around the world. Through our True Music platform, we have commissioned a report to listen and learn, and to mark our own commitment to making music culture safer and fairer for all we explore the actions we can take. We start to see what more inclusive dancefloors can look like.

Ten Years Ago Today, Excision Released His Monstrous Debut Album, “X Rated”

Unless you lived in the UK, dubstep back in 2011 was still in its infancy. Yeah, guys like 12th Planet, Rusko, Zeds Dead, Borgore, maybe even Flux Pavilion and Doctor P were popular in the US, but it’s nothing like the boom the genre experienced in the following years. Still, one of the most important albums this side of the Atlantic came out ten years ago today, September 12, 2011 — I’m speaking, of course, of Excision’s debut album, X Rated.

For years at this point, Excision had been a staple at Shambhala, releasing yearly mixes that all but defined the tone of dubstep for the next year. But albums in dubstep were at this point almost unheard of, with the important exception of Burial (who many would classify as a much different type of dubstep either way). Excision’s X Rated paved the way for countless dubstep albums following it, from the likes of Borgore in 2014, Kill The Noise in 2015, Zomboy in 2014, even Dirtyphonics in 2013.

(It must be noted that Nero’s Welcome Reality came a year before X Rated, however the UK duo were not as widely known in the states at the time, though their sound would go on to become a huge inspiration for many bass producers in another way.)

Excision called upon the help of Messinian for the album’s opening track which has become iconic.

Explicit expert, the highly exalted
I exercise dancefloors, leave ’em exhausted
Exploring apex, sound expedition
Filled with excess demons ya’ll can bring the exorcism

I exert stress when I export beats
That exhilarate the hard and exterminate the weak
Execution level next, no way to explain it
I’m XXX bitch, triple X-rated

He also brought on longtime friends Downlink and Datsik, who were just about on Excision’s level at the time (not counting current falls from grace for the latter), as well as UK juggernaut Skism. Many of the songs on the album might sound outdated by today’s production standards, but for many of us who were well into the scene a decade ago, this album is sure to produce some hefty nostalgia.

Refamiliarize yourself with X Rated below! We won’t blame you if you skip track #4 and #9.

Julian Jordan Talks Getting Back on the Road and New Music [Interview]

The last time we spoke with Julian Jordan, I conducted a Zoom interview with him. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the return of live shows was still far off; and with that, the prospect of gathering with friends. A lot has changed since then; live shows are back full-send here in the US, many festivals and promoters are requiring proof of vaccination (or a negative test) to enter venues, and we’re finally able to meet in person again.

Julian Jordan made his triumphant return to US soil last week, including a spectacular show at Hollywood’s iconic Avalon. He dropped an array of bangers including “Old Skool”, “Hyper”, “Without You” and his highly anticipated upcoming collab with Martin Garrix. We got to sit down with Julian and have a brief chat about getting back out on the road, creating energetic music without crowds, and post-pandemic struggles.

Hey Julian! As always, it’s great to talk to you. How does it feel to be back out on the road, back here in the US?

“To be honest, great energy. The first booking I had was in Poland and I remember the energy it gave me to back on stage. And this year, really proud again to play music that you’ve been working on for a year-and-a-half. Yeah, the feeling was indescribable and right after that moment, I was like, okay, I definitely want to continue doing this. Then I did Romania, Israel, now I’m here. So, I’m still in that moment of full energy, I’m ready!”

Over the past year-and-a-half, I feel like you’ve been putting out bangers, like club stuff. What makes you find the inspiration to put out that energetic music when there hasn’t been any crowds?

“To be honest, the first month I was really struggling with that, because it’s hard to imagine a crowd in your head. But, then I actually went back to where I started, and I started producing when I was 12. I was already making club music and festival music, even though I couldn’t go to clubs or festivals. So, I didn’t have any experience, but I just did, because I love club music and I love festival music. So, with that in mind, I started to make the music that I wanted to make, and that was the music that I’m playing in clubs as well. So, it’s not really about like, that you could play in in the club, but that you like it as well. You can vibe to it at home. So, that was what I kept in mind. I wanted to be able to play this for my friends or when I’m partying on my own. So, that’s just the mindset.”

I know you got on the road, you did Creamfields, you and Martin debuted a new song. It’s so good to see you and Martin together. We can we expect to see that on the streaming platforms?

“Yeah, we work together a lot. And we have like a hundred projects, then there’s this one thing that really stands out, it’s like we have to finish this. And I remember Martijn called me, we had this track together, he was like, yo, listen up, I have this vocal from Tinie Tempah, and he was like, it fits perfectly on our track. We flew him over from the UK after two weeks and we just recorded it and then the track was done. So, it’s pretty sick. And then we tried it out on Creamfields, which the reaction was insane. Especially for a track that was made, like we just talked about, no shows at all, just imagination. So, to see it work so well live was actually very sick.”

It must be nice to be back here in LA. Do you have any stand out places here or places you like to check out?

“Yeah, I wish I was here longer. I have to go to Boston tomorrow, and I was in San Francisco, but I took a few days off in San Francisco because I had to leave from the UK. And, because you don’t want to be in quarantine back in Holland, so I had to leave directly to here. So, I had like four days in San Fran, which were great. But, I didn’t have the time to check out stuff in LA. I really wanted to do that, but I had a great dinner tonight. So, yeah, let’s say I had really good dinner and I saw some stuff in San Francisco.”

What can fans expect for the rest of the year? And where will we see you here in the US, any festivals or anything?

“So, we’re planning on doing more tours of the States, because this is one of the few places on earth you can visit to play music as a DJ. So, the plan is to be back here. I’m doing Boston tomorrow, then after that I’m doing Dallas and Houston. I think I’m going home, because I have to go to Asia. After Asia, we’re already looking at new dates in the US, so it’s still hectic. Then like one day before you go it gets cancelled because of new rules. So, it’s always a hard time to know if you’re actually going to do it. But, if it continues to be like this, I think it’s going to be all good.”

Any words for the fans?

“Thanks so much for staying with me, especially during one and a half years of no partying and I’m finally ready to do it again. So, I hope you guys are ready too, and I’ll see you somewhere around the world soon. At a club or festival or something.”

Apple Music is Using Shazam Technology to Pay Out Artists Featured in DJ Mixes

Apple Music has announced the platform will ID tracks and pay out artists accordingly within DJ mixes.

Using the widely popular Shazam technology, acquired by Apple in 2018 for $400 million, Apple Music has developed a method that will properly identify and compensate all of the individual creators involved in making a particular DJ mix — including the artists behind the music.

There are already thousands of DJ mixes available on Apple Music from Studio !K7, Boiler Room, Mixmag, Cercle and more. Over Black Music month, the platform commissioned DJ mixes from Honey Dijon, Amorphous, DBN Gogo, DJ Clue, Dām Funk, Funk Flex and others. In addition, Charlotte de Witte recently launched an exclusive residency mix series via Apple Music.

This type of payout model has been a long time coming, and will undoubtedly set the bar for other platforms that stream DJ mixes regularly. At this time, Apple Music does not allow user generated content and will only publish mixes from artists that have identified 70% of the combined tracks.

Major players in the dance music industry are raving about the new feature…

Apple Music is the first platform that offers continuous mixes where there’s a fair fee involved for the artists whose tracks are included in the mixes and for the artist making those mixes. It’s a step in the right direction where everyone gets treated fairly. I’m beyond excited to have the chance to provide online mixes again. There’s a different approach to it compared to playing a peak time set in a club or at a festival. It enables me to, without any limits, offer an insight in my music collection.  Charlotte De Witte

This is a big moment for !K7. Through the partnership with Apple we finally have a place to celebrate DJ-Kicks with additional 14 editions which haven‘t been in the market for over 15 years. – Horst Weidenmueller,  Founder, Studio !K7

Tomorrowland is delighted that Apple Music subscribers around the world can now go down memory lane and immerse themselves in more than 100 iconic full Tomorrowland DJ sets from the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 festival editions, as well as the digital editions of Tomorrowland – Around the World and Tomorrowland 31.12.2020. Previously unavailable on streaming, legendary performances from the likes of Alesso, Amelie Lens, Carl Cox, Charlotte de Witte, David Guetta, Diplo, Hardwell, Major Lazer, Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers, Tiësto and many more are now available to stream and relive – united in one magical place. Filip Teerlinck, Head of Media, Tomorrowland

In 1992 Mixmag invented the world’s first mix CD ‘Mixmag Live’ with Carl Cox and Dave Seaman. It changed mix-tape culture, ensuring for the first time that the music heard at raves and clubs could be bought and heard whilst the royalties were paid fairly to the featured artists and DJs. Now almost 30 years later Mixmag fully backs Apple Music’s new DJ Mix technology. Mixmag’s always recognised, showcased and empowered dance music producers – working with Apple Music continues our commitment to those artists. Ensuring DJs, producers, rights holders and suppliers are given long term financial pay outs from mixes containing their work is vital in our industry and Apple Music have just made that accessible to everyone.  Nick Stevenson, Managing Director, Mixmag

Virtual Riot Releases Third Studio Album, “Simulation” [MUST LISTEN]

It’s unlikely that Virtual Riot had a plan to release each of his albums four years apart, but we’re here now, four years after the release of The Classics, which came out four years after the release of There Goes Your Money, all the way back in 2013. Now, we have Simulation, the latest album from the celebrated bass producer on Disciple Recs.

Spanning 16 songs, one hour of music, and collaborations with So Loki, Angelika, Danyka Nadeau, Lektrique & Leah Culver, and Modestep and FRANK ZUMMO, this is undoubtedly Virtual Riot’s most impressive project to-date.

Virtual Riot, real name Christian Valentin “Val” Brunn, has been releasing music for nearly a decade. In that time, he’s become known as one of not just dubstep’s, but electronic music’s most preeminent producers. Whether pure talent, or excessively hard work, or more than likely a combination a both, he has time and again taken finds minds, put them in a blender, and spit them out the other side mushy and oddly euphoric.

Simulation traverses a variety of styles in bass music over the course of an hour, never falling flat or getting stale along the way — and for a 16-track bass album, that’s often a tall order.

Less than a third of the album was previously released as singles, making the bulk of the listening experience fresh and exciting. If you haven’t given it a listen yet, check out Simulation below!
