‘After Daft’ Book Covers the Duo’s Entire Career, Impact on Live Music & Culture

An upcoming book celebrates Daft Punk — capturing the pioneering duo’s impact on pop, electronic and live music.

After Daft by author Gabriel Szatan will cover their entire career, from formation in 1993 to their unexpected split in 2021, including genre- and industry-defining moments. Plus, a particularly in-depth look at Daft Punk’s seminal Alive 2006-07 tour, which changed the look and feel of live music forever.

A press release details: “It will be the most thorough attempt yet to document Daft Punk’s unique position within the cultural landscape, including interviews with a broad swathe of contributors who worked closely with Daft Punk for years, as well as others in the wider industry who were affected & inspired by the duo and their enduring impact.”

Szatan sets up the book as follows:

Daft Punk sit in the pantheon of pop alongside Prince, Talking Heads, Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder, Kraftwerk, Missy Elliott, David Bowie or any visionary you’d care to name. Beyond making joyous records, there are countless compelling sub-narratives which flow in and out of their career: Alive 2006-07 was as consequential for dance music as The Beatles’ 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show was for rock ’n’ roll — what changed about the way we respond to concerts in the aftermath? Were the Teachers sufficiently recognised for their contributions? And how did Daft Punk retain anonymity at a time when the internet erased privacy for everyone else? I’m excited to bring it all to light — as well as making the case for how, over 28 years, music really did sound better with them.

After Daft will be released in 2023.

So much evolved from 1993 to 2021: French touch, blog house, mashup, hyperpop, stadium raves, the way we respond to concerts ++

But many house & techno innovators lost out as EDM went supernova. It’s far from a smooth line

Daft Punk are the perfect axis point to explore it all

REPORT: Owners of TikTok Set to Launch Music Streaming Service

The company behind TikTok is reportedly starting a music streaming service, set to launch later this year.

Owners of the popular video-sharing platform, ByteDance, are working to bring the new music streaming experience known as Feilo exclusively to China.

According to multiple reports, ByteDance’s Vice President of Product and Strategy, Alex Zhu, conceptualized the app in 2019. Two years later, ByteDance values the platform at $425 billion for private equity investors.

Tencent Music Entertainment, also owned by ByteDance, has cut off all major deals with record labels in China following an exclusivity ban regulation — making way for new opportunities.

ByteDance plans to promote the music business from both ends of music streaming and distribution, according to 36Kr.

ByteDance has yet to publicly confirm the upcoming platform.

Thomas Xavier Demonstrates his Production Class on, ‘Make That Kitty Purr’

“Take Over The World,” marks the final release for the ‘Pussy On A Pedestal’ EP series that has been upon us. G-house tinged and full of flavor, Thomas Xavier has been getting dirty with his bubbling singles released month to month. “Take Over The World,” is led by it’s drum work, which is followed by the rest of the parts of the track. It doesn’t take long for dirty basslines to find their way in and the build-ups to unfold –  Thomas Xavier getting right down to business in no time flat. Distinguishing factors that give this single individuality is it’s glitchy disposition, lots of wubs/wobbles, plus vocal chops that have a classic edge. Yet, every track featured on ‘Pussy On A Pedestal’ feels like they belong together.

Thomas Xavier is sure to drop new music in the coming months, his rise and calculated maneuvers certainly eye-catching as well as something he will continue to capitalize on.

Along with 200,000+ streams gathered since May and signings from labels since starting the roll out of original music, Thomas Xavier has been slaying it when it comes to shows. Since Summer of 2021, he’s opened for BIJOU, Destructo, Tombz, black a.m., in cities like Milwaukee and Las Vegas.  Now, he’s set to play Electric Island Festival on 9/25,  breaking through into festival territory in addition to the many corners he’s grown in this year.
