New Artist Spotlight: Wall of Sound, We’ve Missed You So – Abiura Ups the Sound Design Game

Daniele Vergine is not technically a new artist. In fact, as the guitarist of post-metal/blackened mathcore group Noise Trail Immersion, he’s quite well-known in metal circles. That all stands to reason once one hears his debut solo album under the moniker Abiura, Hauntology, which released in mid-September: it’s expertly crafted, tonally near perfect and sound designed to a level that will likely make even the likes of Amon Tobin and Noisia ill with jealousy. Difficult to pull off as an expert, and nearly impossible for even the most prodigal of novices.

It’s not that surprising that a metal artist, especially one who’s already dipped a few toes in the experimental pool such as Vergine, would create an album like Hauntology. Metal and electronica have enjoyed a long and prosperous love affair since long before pop got a hold of EDM. More importantly, death, black and gothic metal musicians are some of the most practiced, studied and talented in any genre, so if anyone could pull off a gorgeous, dissonant, wall of sound-style experimental electronica album that rivals Thys and Tobin, it’s someone like Vergine.

Hauntology is not split into tracks, per se, but rather six movements which blend into each other. This makes it even more clear from the jump that the album has been composed like an orchestra piece. On the very first listen, it’s clear it would have to be thus. From the opening of movement I: “Abjection,” even when it appears there’s only a single note winding its way through the staff and then two and then three, it’s clear there’s a whole cast of supporting sound design written into the background. It only gets more layered from there. Ambient sounds, distortion, echo effects, sine wave manipulation…there’s so much going on in that first six minutes that the effect is almost binaural.

Audiences coming from electronic or EDM backgrounds will initially think all the music is made digitally as the tones are so clear and drawn out, but as Hauntology moves through its subsequent movements with excellent, metal names like “The Cage of Precorporation” and “Perpetual Waves Between States of Anxiety,” Vergine’s guitar work starts to emerge. Now we must wonder if all those previous tones were also made by extreme manipulation of guitar notes. It could, in fact, be all guitar.

This is where it really gets interesting from a theory or sound design perspective, as Hauntology starts to sound distinctly wall of sound-y. Pioneered by the late and not-so-great Phil Spector, wall of sound is typified by loads of instruments flooding a track so it becomes one continuous, well, wall of sound. Hence the name. Extremely popular with post-grunge rock bands of the shoegazey variety in the 90s such Catherine Wheel and Hum, wall of sound started to go the way of dream pop in the early 00s and it still poking around in the both EDM and experimental electronica circles.

Vergine as Abiura is decidedly not shoegazey or dream pop-esque in his treatment of Hauntology, however, and this is where his “dissonant black metal” background, to use his term, comes into play. The dissonance built into literally every fiber of every track is drawn out and wound into helix formations in a way that wouldn’t be possible in a metal setting. It’s as if all the tightened coils of fast guitar work he’s created with Noise Trail Immersion simply needed to be unwound in Vergine’s head. He’s done a lovely job of lining them up end to end and giving them their own space.

Designed as a concept album, Vergine says Hauntology is meant to address the dissonance or uneasiness we all feel as humans head-on. The result is something beyond the clatter, however, and it’s quite beautiful. That’s often what metal and, ostensibly, all forms of art are about: taking that madness and fear and turning it into something which transcends all of it. Artists like Vergine with projects like Abiura decide to stare those things right in the face. Vergine just happens to do it really, really well.

Hauntology by Abiura

Hauntology is out now on Moment of Collapse Records and can be streamed on Spotify and streamed or purchased on Bandcamp. We recommend the Bandcamp stream, as there are no gaps in the tracks. For metalheads wanting to check out Noise Trail Immersion, they’ll have a new album out called Curia by winter. Info here.

Twitch & Warner Music Group Partner Up for Exclusive Music Programming

Warner Music Group (WMG) and Twitch have announced a new partnership that allows for premium, music-centric programming.

This marks Twitch’s first partnership with a major record company, bringing new ways to interact with music-related content on the service through various recording artist channels.

Throughout the lockdown, DJs and artists took to Twitch as a means to keep up appearances and continue playing live for their audiences. The platform shifted from a largely gaming atmosphere to welcoming more types of creators.

Tracy Chan, VP, Head of Music says, “Twitch has always been – and will continue to be – creator first. For fans, artists and all creators, this is a great step forward.”

Warner Records superstars Bella Poarch and Saweetie are among the first to offer a steady stream of exclusive content and behind-the-scenes material, as well as Atlantic Records’ viral breakout singer/producer Sueco.

AUSTERIA Snaps with New Banger “GET FUCKED,” Out on Skull Vision ‘Perception’ Comp [LISTEN]

AUSTERIA has unleashed an absolute banger in the form of “GET FUCKED.”

As aggressive as the title suggests, “GET FUCKED” thrives off its heavy, bass-fueled hits, massive leads and steady, stomping flow. The producer shows off her devastating style of creative expression with emphasis on innovative sound design. AUSTERIA’s dark masterpiece came together rather instinctively, but has been waiting in the shadows for the right time to surface.

AUSTERIA shares of the release:

I was actually watching a TV show and a character jumped through a window exclaiming “get fucked!” And I immediately paused the show, sampled it, and started writing the track. I knew I wanted her to be heavy, and so I just started layering my own serum patches until it sounded cool and then dabbled in some resampling of the serum sounds. I actually let the track sit for about a year, and then completely revamped it for release. I was able to apply everything I’d learned to make her shine and I am so proud of how she turned out!

“GET FUCKED” comes as part of Skull Vision’s new Perception compilation, also featuring ANOXEX, Hübac, Jebanski, Mxdelo, Nolweez, WEJJPLAY, and label founder ROYALFLU$H.

3LAU Gives Fans 50% Ownership In His Next Song In Industry First

3LAU’s involvement in the NFT and crypto spaces over the past couple years have been well-documented. Always pursuing the next big, equitable financial system, the DJ/producer has pioneered many different avenues for artists in the electronic dance world to capitalize on their music, and, in some cases, for the fans to benefit as well.

His next song, “Worst Case,” will be the first use case of Royal’s mission to make music a publicly accessible investable asset class. Royal is offering 50% of the masters’ recording royalties to “Worst Case” which will be released on October 8, to Royal users, making them equal shareholders of the song alongside its creator.

In a blog post on Medium, 3LAU writes, “One of my goals as a musician is to not only make unique art, but to build an everlasting symbiotic relationship between artists and listeners.”

He continues, “One of the most common questions I’m asked is if music actually generates revenue. There’s a pervasive misconception that streaming services don’t pay artists, when in reality, intermediaries end up with the lion’s share of the revenue due to legacy record agreements. The fact is that the music industry has been growing like never before over the last few years and independent artists who maintain ownership have seen revenue growth in multiples of 20–50x. […] It starts here: you and I become co-owners of the music that I create and you inspire. And we will change the music business together.”

“Worst Case” drops October 8. You can sign up for early access on Royal here. 50% of the streaming revenue ownership will be shared to users who win the early access contest.

Audien Discusses New Single “Wish It Was You”, Return To Prog House Roots, & More [Interview]

Audien has had fans buzzing with excitement over his latest single “Wish It Was You” that saw the young and immensely talented artist returning to his blissful progressive house roots. We recently had the chance to talk with Audien about his latest single, his epic Summer 2021 mix, and where his sound is heading. Enjoy!

We love your new Summer 2021 mix. How has the response been for you with your fans?

Audien: The response was amazing, fans love mixes. They love it because they can put it on at the gym, in their car on long drives. Personally I love mixes too, so I started doing these every summer and winter.

Tell us about your new single “Wish It Was You”. How did you and Cate Downey find each other? Had this been in the works for some time?

Audien: Honestly, I was sent some of Cate’s work and that song really really resonated with me. I took it and ran with it. Working with her was so amazing because she let me be me and allowed me to take it in a direction she may have not originally wanted. Glad we did!

We’ve heard your sound float between the dance pop and tropical genres with your previous singles. “Wish It Was You” and your summer mix definitely is reminiscent of your progressive house and trance roots. Is this sound something we can expect to hear more from you this year?

Audien: This is the beginning of a trilogy of songs that will be progressive house. That style has been my most consistent sound and I decided I’m going to be really honing in on it and modernizing that. This is exactly what to expect, but I’ll always throw some left fielders in there.

Are there any artists that are really inspiring you right now?

Audien: Honestly, I’ve been listening to older music lately. Just anything from 2012-15.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Audien: Progressive House never died. Love you!

Fortnite Introducing Soundwave Series Of In-Game Musical Performances

Back in 2019, Fortnite made history with its in-game performance from Marshmello, with over 10 million concurrent players during the musical event. Over the following year and change, the game would see a variety of artists from Major Lazer and Travis Scott grace the fictional island for one-off events, but now it’s changing into a series they’re calling Soundwave.

Every show takes place in its own interactive experience in-game. The first artist in the line-up? You may have heard him on the radio in Fortnite recently: Egyptian superstar Mohamed Hamaki on October 1.

Over the coming months, Australian singer-songwriter Tones And I, Brazilian rapper Emicida, Japanese pop artist and music producer Gen Hoshino, and record breaking French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura will have their own shows to experience in Fortnite. Keep an eye out for details as the soundwave goes on.

Along with his hits, Hamaki’s show will feature the first performance of his new song “Leilt Elomr”! In short, artists are now premiering new music in Fortnite, which is just sort of insane to think about.

To jump in, players can enter the “HAMAKI’S MUSICAL SHOW” playlist (made by community creators Team Alliance and TheBoyDilly) starting Friday, October 1 at 2 PM ET. The show will repeat non-stop for 48 hours (until Sunday, October 3 at 2 PM ET), so no need to worry if you can’t jump in right away. Players who attend the show will receive the Soundwave Series – Hamaki Spray as a memento!

The future of musical integration in video games, and how music is presented in them, is likely to change forever following this groundbreaking move from Epic Games and Fortnite. Check out the Leilt Elomr emote below.

New Music: Rebel ACA & The French Monkey Wrench ‘Never Give Up’ on Getting their Message to the Public [Video]

Rebel ACA & The French Monkey Wrench have always been on the funky side of hip hop, with their first album Sunday’s Cool and their early singles being infused with jazz flourishes. Recently, however, the duo have gone a bit farther into funk when they started working with reggae vocalists Danny Sprang and iSTAND and fellow producer Lil’ Rossco.

Adding these reggae and syncopation elements to their 2020 and early 2021 singles “Dance Without Fear” and “Mr. Simplicity,” respectively seemed to push the Rebel and French sound into a more clearly positive realm as well. Just as edgy with their jazz infusion and with Rebel ACA’s powerful vocals cutting through whatever backing track was going on, these tracks seemed to ring with both artists and audiences. So, despite a bit of a break between early 2021 and now, it’s no surprise that their new single “Never Give Up” has a similar tone and vibe.

Based on tracks like “Social Distancing” and of course “Dance Without Fear,” Rebel, French and their compatriots were very much affected by the COVID lockdown, as most musical artists were. They decided to turn that crazy time into something positive, however, and that’s where we also find “Never Give Up.” Likely the most pop-friendly offering from the collabing artists thus far, “Never Give Up” is a clear call to rebuild, but it’s on a personal level. Filled with island beats and vintage synths, this track solidifies Rebel, French and their collaborators in the uplifting dance music game.

We shouldn’t assume that this is Rebel ACA & The French Monkey Wrench’s final form. The duo are diverse in sound and style with the sky really being the limit in terms of the art they want to put out. Like many musical artists have done, in the last two years, these two along with their collaborators have put out work that will help lift up their audience in these strange times. Still with a strong social commentary and a strong base in funk and hip hop, “Never Give Up” is a great, positive vibe for what is hopefully better times to come.

“Never Give Up” is out now on Buttercuts Records. Click here to purchase or stream on multiple platforms.
