Pop and EDM Merge Flawlessly With Nick De La Hoyde and D.E.L – Check out Two New Tracks from the Trio of Brothers

We’ve become marginally obsessed with Nick De La Hoyde and his EDM-infused pop here at Your EDM over the last few years, and recently the obsession grew when he introduced his group project, D.E.L, with his brothers Joseph and Timm. The flipside of the same coin, D.E.L makes equally beautiful pop-infused EDM.

The trio have gotten into the habit lately of dropping tracks close together on their respective Spotify pages. The newest, semi-acoustic pop love song “About U” released on Nick’s solo stream on September 3, while “Yoko” just hit D.E.L’s page about a week later and could be the progressive house anthem of the fall. Both with corresponding videos, “About U” and “Yoko” make it clear that no matter what genre the De La Hoyde boys are working on, they work together and it produces amazing results.

De La Hoyde’s “About U” is a bit more acoustically-tinged than some of his recent solo work. With a lyrical verse structure that follows the same pattern as Love To’s “Habits (Stay High)” but in every other way is the antithesis of the 2014 hit in both subject matter and key. Underneath the vox and acoustic guitar ornamentation, the brothers laid down a slower yet nonetheless recognizable drum & bass beat with some trap ornamentation in the chorus and codas. This is what the De La Hoydes do so well: mixing and blending a number of different styles and genres well enough that they’re interesting to underground music nerds while still having mass appeal.

“Yoko,” on the other hand, is more solidly in the EDM camp. The chill yet fervent and danceable prog house beat drives the tune rather than the vox. The vox, by the way, are once again impeccably done and add the pop cachet to the track that would otherwise render it more lofi than anything. The future bass-style effects and rendering on those vocals is, somewhat ironically, what turns “Yoko” into a Chainsmokers-style beauty banger. Pop, pretty and uplifting, “Yoko” shows the real potential of the brothers who call themselves D.E.L.

If you’re trying to get a more pop-inclined friend to cut their teeth on EDM, artists like the De La Hoydes, either solo as nick or D.E.L as a trio are a good bet. Bringing the melodies of pop and lofi indie pop together with EDM beats and sound design the way that they do, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world joins YEDM in our obsession over these Aussie artists.

Both “About U” and “Yoko” are out now on Nick De La Hoyde’s and D.E.L’s Spotify pages, respectively. Make sure to check out their YouTube channels as well for some great videos of their previous work.

Armin van Buuren Drops Monstrous Remix of SLANDER & Dylan Matthew’s “Love Is Gone”

Released May 2019, over two years ago, “Love Is Gone” from SLANDER and Dylan Matthew has been getting some stellar remixes, courtesy of Kaskade, R3HAB, and Alok — and now, it rounds up with a final, and absolutely stellar, remix from Armin van Buuren.

This is one of the few times that Armin will dip his toe into the bass world, but with an original as big as this one, it isn’t too much of a stretch. And from what he’s done with it, we’re glad he did. It takes almost half of the track to really get into the meat of it — we need that extended mix — but it’s well worth the wait.

Check it out below!

Wooli & Trivecta Release “Light Up The Sky” with Creed Singer Scott Stapp on Ophelia

We’ve been waiting… and the second collaboration from Wooli and Trivecta is finally here and it’s absolutely beautiful. When it was announced that Scott Stapp of Creed would be doing the vocals for the track, of course our minds went to the numerous — numerous — Creed memes. Well, we’re happy to report that Stapp absolutely understood the assignment.

“Light Up The Sky” is wonderfully powerful and anthemic in every way that it should have been. Between the triplet synths, the perfect gravelly vocals from Stapp, and the beautiful melody throughout, this is poised to be a truly massive song for everyone involved.

If you love this song, you’re not going to want to miss Wooli’s set at EDC later this month when it’s inevitably dropped at peak time. Check it out below!

Martin Garrix Drops Heavy New Club Banger “Diamonds” with Julian Jordan & Tinie Tempah

It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper club banger from Martin Garrix, but this newest with Julian Jordan and Tinie Tempah definitely scratches the itch.

“Diamonds” is relentless from the offset, with suspenseful undertones and percussion that constantly feels like it’s getting faster and faster. Coupled with Tempah’s iconic vocals, the pounding bass on the drop is more than enough to get any dancefloor absolutely jumping.

Andreas Moe, From Avicii’s “Fade Into Darkness,” Releases Acoustic Version for Track’s 10th Anniversary

It may be almost four years since the death of Avicii, but it seems that almost every month there is another way to memorialize his life. Today, Andreas Moe, the singer from “Fade Into Darkness,” has released an acoustic version of the song that is sorrowfully poignant given the fate of the producer.

“Fade Into Darkness” was released as a single in 2011, making this year its 10th anniversary. Premiered via EDM.com, the acoustic version is a far more somber look back at some of Avicii’s powerful lyrics.

“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already since this song was released,” Moe told EDM.com. “It’s a song that still – to this day – means so much to me. To help increase awareness and try to break the stigma around mental health I’ve recorded this acoustic version. Take care of yourself & each other.”

Listen below.

Pitchfork Upgrades Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’ Album Rating, Downgrades ‘Random Access Memories’

Pitchfork album reviews, with their concrete ratings, have long been a focus of disagreement between music fans. It’s nigh impossible to achieve a perfect 10 album, so any artist is already starting with a handicap attached when you’re giving a piece of subjective music a discreet grading, and Pitchfork editors are — though, credit where credit is due, experts at their craft — sometimes a bit fussy.

That being said, no one is immune to the passage of time, and the publication released a list of 19 albums yesterday whose scores they would change “if we could.”

Among them are two Daft Punk albums: their sophomore album, Discovery, and their fourth album, Random Access Memories.

It’s hard to imagine that when Discovery came out in 2001, Pitchfork scored it a meager 6.4. (Homework wasn’t scored until 2018 for their weekly retrospective series upon which it received a 9.2.) However, over time, Discovery has become such an important, critical piece of not only Daft Punk’s history, but electronic music as a whole. Therefore, the score has been amended to a perfect 10.

“[…] if scores are meant to indicate a work’s longevity or impact, the original review is invalidated by the historic record. Daft Punk’s second album, Discovery, is the centerpiece of their career, an album that transcended the robots’ club roots and rippled through the decades that followed. Amending this scoring error is all too easy.”

On the other hand, Random Access Memories received a 8.8 upon its initial review when it came out in 2013. Often a point of contention among Daft Punk fans themselves, the album was a far departure from their previous three albums, bringing in more live instrument elements and more vocalists, changing much of what made the French duo so iconic for much of the previous two decades. Many fans loved the new direction, while others weren’t so enamored. The latter have come out on top, over time, however, as the album was downgraded to a 6.8.

“It’s not that people aren’t listening to it; the album has racked up nearly 1.5 billion plays on Spotify alone. RAM has some jams, but it doesn’t feel pivotal in the same way that Discovery did. It didn’t push pop music forward; it merely opened the door for countless Moroder cameos and convinced Pharrell that what the world really needed was a 24-hour ‘Happy’ video.”

Insomniac Shares Lineup For Long-Awaited Return Of Bass vs Hardstyle Festival, Project Z

As all of Insomniac’s festival properties have continued to return this year, fan-favorite Project Z will also make its return in just over a month at the NOS Events Center on November 27. The festival positions itself as a versus between its two brands, Bassrush and Basscon, generally bass music like dubstep, drum & bass, and trap, and hardstyle and hard dance, respectively.

This year’s lineup features plenty of talent from the likes of The Glitch Mob, Rusko, Nero, Jantsen, and Zomboy to Atmozfears, Audiofreq b2b Darksiderz, Lil Texas, Illuminize b2b Talon, and more. There isn’t a whole lot of drum & bass on the lineup, but Justin Hawkes (fka Flite) has long been a champion of proper US drum & bass lineups on social media and it’s exciting to finally see him on a lineup like this. So if you like DnB, this is definitely not a set you want to miss.

Tickets are on sale now via their website, starting at $60 for GA and $100 for VIP. See the full lineup below.

Diplo Responds To Accusations Of Sexual Assault In Face Of Possible Criminal Charges

On Tuesday, October 5, it was reported that the Los Angeles city attorney is considering criminal charges against Diplo, including invasion of privacy and intentionally giving someone a sexually transmitted infection, that stem from an October 2020 police report.

“We are reviewing the referral and have no further comment at this time,” said Rob Wilcox, spokesperson for the LA city attorney.

Yesterday, for the first time, Diplo responded to the allegations at length in a post on Instagram, sharing screen recordings of text conversations with the accuser, and going into great detail regarding his relationship with the accuser and their interactions over a number of years.

In the post, Diplo claims he will “keep this story easy to read” at which he certainly makes a valiant attempt, though the details do sometimes become muddled.

He ends the post by writing, “I will continue to do everything I can to end this in the most respectful way but I will not give in to lies and harassment.”

You can read it in its entirety below.

New Artist Spotlight: Har’monique’s Smooth Tunes Will Give Listeners ‘High Feelings’

Har’monique is a rue new artist by Spotify’s standards, having just released her first two singles, “Take Over” and “High Feelings” since August of this year. Releases aside, however, the talented vocalist and songwriter has been working on music for much longer. She would have to, with that set of pipes. Har’monique’s clear, pitch-perfect vocals on her debut tracks which preclude her debut album, out later this month, rival some of the great female singers of all time.

“Take Over” is the first track Har’monique released to the streaming world in mid-August. Teaming up with Georgia-based beatmaker Kontrabandz, Har’monique shows she’s a triple threat right away, as the empowering vocals are flawlessly delivered both as melodic R&B and flawless reggae flow. The track itself is a chilled out reggaeton beat with Caribbean-inspired accompaniment which gives the overall vibe of this song a very “Rock the Boat”-era Aaliyah vibe. Har’monique’s vocals certainly hold up to the legendary pop star and others, so she’s clearly starting out in a good place.

Har’monique just dropped a second teaser single called “High Feelings,” also presumably produced by Kontrabandz. Also conjuring island sounds, this track is a bit more subtle and romantic, which means it really highlights the strength and skill of Har’monique’s vocals. It’s also got a fun throwback 90s R&B tinge to it which again conjures memories of the late, great Aaliyah, Rihanna and perhaps even perhaps a little Brandy and  Monica.

Clean vocals and fun, catchy melodies seem to be what fans can expect from Har’monique’s upcoming album, if “Take Over” and “High Feelings” are anything to go by. With her near operatic voice and her style already strongly defined, this artist is poised to make melodic, Caribbean waves in the R&B world very soon.

“Take over” and “High Feelings” are available to stream on Spotify. Check out Har’monique’s YouTube channel as well to check out her video for “High Feelings,” and watch both spaces for the release of her forthcoming album this month.

Kanye West Earns His First Diamond Record With A Little Help From Daft Punk

Fourteen years after its initial release, Kanye West’s “Stronger” finally goes diamond with 10 million equivalent sales.

The song was released on West’s 2004 album Graduation and famously samples Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.”

Writes HipHopDX, “The genre-blending tune was a labor of love for Kanye West and his team as the track was mixed over 75 times and had more than 10 engineers working on perfecting the record — until Timbaland came in at the last minute to make the ‘drums pop.’”

“When [Kanye] sampled Daft Punk on an ASR-10, Plain Pat said, ‘You can’t flip this. It’s not going to work.’ Pat was highly skeptical,” said Anthony Kilhoffersaid, one of Kanye’s go-to engineers. “At the end of the day, he cooked up ‘Stronger’ in five minutes, and it was quite a departure from the boom-bap Kanye West production, and the beginning of experimenting with other albums.

Kanye West’s ‘Stronger’ is now @RIAA certified DIAMOND ! Congratulations to Yeezy and the entire team. pic.twitter.com/ISgiWiF52b
