Spotify Probed by Congress Over Controversial “Discovery Mode” Feature

Spotify is being probed by Congress due to ongoing concerns over the platform’s Discovery Mode feature.

Spotify’s Discovery Mode was announced last November as a pilot program for artists to opt in to get paid out partly in exposure. For a fee, Spotify agrees to push music into various personalized playlists, which could arguably be a beneficial tool for lesser known artists — as long as they’re protected.

In Spotify’s words, “Labels or rights holders agree to be paid a promotional recording royalty rate for streams in personalized listening sessions where we provided this service.” However, the success of any given track is still up to the listeners and overall streams.

The Discovery Mode feature is being scrutinized for various reasons. Most glaringly, because the platform pays out such a low amount in royalties to artists per stream as it is. Additionally, an op-ed from Rolling Stone citing the Artist Rights Alliance calls it out as a “money grab” and a form of “payola.” Our particular concerns with the feature are outlined here.

Onto Congress getting involved. A letter sent by Representative Jerrold Nadler (chairman of the House Judiciary Committee) and Representative Hank Johnson Jr. (chairman of the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet), addressed to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, states concerns over Discovery Mode — a potential “race to the bottom” as artists attempt to “break through an extremely crowded and competitive music environment.”

Nadler and Johnson write, “At a time when the global pandemic has devastated incomes for musicians and other performers, without a clear path back to pre-pandemic levels, any plan that could ultimately lead to further cut pay for working artists and ultimately potentially less consumer choice raises significant policy issues.”

Congress is asking for Spotify to expand on the pilot program in great detail, including if and when the feature will become permanent, how the platform is preventing a “race to the bottom” scenario, how the “promotional royalty rate” is being calculated, how the measure of impact is recorded, and whether or not artists will be able to recover lost royalties if the program doesn’t yield increased streams.

Spotify’s response is expected by June 16.

Skrillex Uploaded His Legendary “Cinema” Remix 10 Years Ago Today

Thinking back on the past decade of dance music, a lot of it turns out to be a blur. From the advent of trap in the EDM scene, to the rise of future bass, producers like Flume, Oliver Heldens, Martin Garrix, and more, a lot happened. But looking back at ten years ago today, something truly magical happened… Skrillex uploaded his remix of Benny Benassi’s “Cinema” to YouTube for the first time.

The track was technically released earlier in the year (either January, February, March, or even April according to various sources), but one thing that is certain is Skrillex uploaded the track to his YouTube channel on June 9, 2011.

In the time since, the track has become a very real classic in the EDM world, achieving a double platinum status and even winning a GRAMMY for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical in 2012. For years, whenever Skrillex dropped this song at a festival, it was by and large the most hype moment and it never, ever failed to completely and utterly annihilate a crowd.

Of course, lately, Skrillex’s tastes and productions have shifted into a softer, more pop realm. But for fans of his older sound, all the uploads are still there, ready to be enjoyed at a moment’s notice.

Listen to it again below and don’t forget to d-d-d-d-d-drop the bass.

Vindata Release Anticipated Debut Album ‘…With Opened Eyes’ on Monstercat

It’s been a long time since Vindata’s 2015 debut on OWSLA, but it feels even longer. The LA-based electronic R&B duo, Branden Ratcliff and Jared Poythress, started out producing hip-hop and R&B tracks before becoming infatuated with electronic music after hearing Justice’s debut album. During the early 2010s, they refined their sound, moving away from hard, buzzing dance tracks and heading toward a more contemplative downtempo sound, with rich, sensuous melodies and heavily detailed production and eventually found their way to Skrillex’s imprint.

Now, after all that time, they’ve at last released their debut album on Monstercat…With Opened Eyes. The 12-track package features tastemakers like Grammy-winning songwriter Kaydence, vocalists MACKandgold and Maurice Moore, rapper Leon St. Heron, and more. It was also in the works for years while the duo honed in on the vibe they wanted to present with one of the most important works an artist can offer.

…With Opened Eyes is a beautiful amalgamation of all their styles, R&B, hip hop, soul, and electronic, all rolled up into one. The opening track, “Union,” immediately presents a lush soundscape of bass, vocals, and bewitching synth work that leads into the rest of the work on the album.

Vindata share, “The creation of this entire album has been a long process. It really challenged us in new ways. But, it was rewarding at the same time because it personified who we truly are as artists and as individuals. We’re incredibly thankful for all the blessings AND hardships that helped get us here. And we’re humbled to be able to share these experiences with the world.”

The album was launched along with the premiere of “Skin” with Leon St Heron and Leeuw.

“‘Skin’ is a record that we felt captured the true essence of the album, which is why we decided to premiere it alongside the entire project,” the duo said. “The song came together organically with the help of Leon St. Heron and Leeuw. We’ve been friends of Leon for years now, and we were finally able to work together on a track that fits us both. We’ve worked with Leeuw before, and we knew she would bring that deep sultry feeling to the record. We’re extremely grateful for the way it turned out.”

Tom Morello & The Bloody Beetroots To Release Collaborative EP This Month

Last week, the incendiary rock guitarist and acoustic troubadour Tom Morello and the punk-fueled electronic artist The Bloody Beetroots announce a collaborative new project, The Catastrophists EP, to be released on June 18th. The 7-track EP is executive produced by Tom Morello, and produced by The Bloody Beetroots, along with Carl Restivo.

“Radium Girls”, the second song from the EP, is a true tour de force, co-written with Jehnny Beth from Savages, Carl Restivo, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Simone Cogo. Once again, Tom joins forces with Pussy Riot, as well as with Aimee Interrupter (The Interrupters), Mish Way (White Lung), and The Last Internationale on vocals.

Tom Morello said about about “Radium Girls,” “Four extraordinary women (Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, The Interrupters’ Aimee Interrupter, White Lung’s Mish Way, The Last Internationle’s Delila Paz) and the ferocious production of The Bloody Beetroots breathe life into the true story of the Radium Girls, young Illinois factory workers who were the victims of one of the most heinous crimes in US industrial history. I spent every summer as a kid near Ottawa, Illinois where these doomed girls used deadly radium laced paint to make glow in the dark watches. They were encouraged to lick the paintbrushes to a point to increase productivity and profit and in the end their bones literally fell apart from cancer and they were so toxic they had to be buried in lead lined coffins. The resulting court cases and publicity led to historic nationwide labor protection legislation. Every year I place flowers at the small monument to these quiet heroes and this song is dedicated to their memory.”

The Bloody Beetroots about “Radium Girls,” “Radium Girls is what happens when two punks go off to battle; each with his weapon of choice.”

Check out the single and see the full tracklist below.
