Day Trip Festival Relocates to the Lot at Hollywood Park, adjacent to SoFi Stadium

Day Trip, the new festival from Insomniac originally scheduled for July 4th weekend at Berth 46 in San Pedro, Southern California, has relocated to the Lot at Hollywood Park, approximately 20 miles inland northbound next to SoFi Stadium.

Insomniac revealed in their press release: “After tickets sold out so quickly for both days of the festival, we realized that so many more wanted to dance with us over the 4th of July weekend.

“An opportunity opened up at a brand new, larger venue so Day Trip Festival is moving to a new location — The Lot at Hollywood Park, located adjacent to SoFi Stadium. DTF will take over the massive, beautiful lakefront grounds, with plenty of room for us all to dance in the sunshine with a fishbowl in hand. This change will allow us to have a more spacious, improved layout, as well as release a limited amount of additional tickets.”

The move, however, has left many, many prospective attendees sour. The promised “lakefront grounds” will likely be inaccessible to attendees, and the actual scale of the lake is much less appealing. (Images via @bbbbork on Twitter)

In addition to the obvious differences in the venue appearance, there’s the issue of lodging. The long distance from the original venue to the new one will present significant challenges to attendees coming from out of state who’ve booked hotels or AirBnBs closer to San Pedro. Not to mention July 4th weekend will mean more expensive ride shares from their hotels to the new venue if they choose to keep their tickets.

All this being said, it is highly unlikely that that the switch was made with malice intent, or in an effort to “bait and switch” attendees as some have posited on Twitter. Likewise, such a drastic move seems counterintuitive to issues of simple attendance, as Insomniac has the ability internally to limit ticket sales based on capacity.

Read some of the responses to the move from Twitter users below. Day Trip or Insomniac have yet to respond to any of the grievances expressed.

This is a TERRIBLE move. We bought tix cuz of the waterfront venue and promised fireworks WTF @PasqualeRotella

At the VERY LEAST, you should provide FREE shuttles for we who’ve already booked hotels by the original spot
I got my tickets THE DAY they went on sale (both times) & paid flight & hotel MONTHS ago
1st time in LA & you’re taking me from the beach to the ghetto

The event is in a week and half and y’all thought let’s screw over everyone’s travel accommodations so you can make more money??

— Kellz (@codeKELLZ_) June 23, 2021

Same and flying into Long Beach

— Glen HoHo (@ROtorious) June 22, 2021

This is straight up bait and switch. Literally the selling point of this was a ocean side venue. #Scammers

— Kyle A Flammang (@Elyktronic) June 23, 2021

How you gonna have daytrip in a parking lot ??? Why did you move it from the beach . SMH. The wholeeeeee point was to be by the beach . There goes half the venue selling their tickets .

— sugaa titts (@poooksss_) June 23, 2021

Wtfmost of us booked our hotels months ago!! How are y’all going to change the venue 2 weeks before the event!!!

— Michelle (@lustingxoxo) June 23, 2021

Lyft, Uber & yellow cabs aren’t working properly at the moment & you expect your headliners to now travel 20 miles out of town from the original venue? That’s some greedy shit. Ok

Tomorrowland 2021 Officially Cancelled After Weeks Of Uncertainty

Back in the beginning of June, Tomorrowland 2021 looked promising as Belgium aimed to reopen by September, allowing up to 75,000 people for outdoor events, right at the cusp of the festival’s usual 70,000 per day average. Unfortunately, just a couple weeks later, the government denied the festival’s permit application, citing “risks to public safety and health.” More specific reasons cited include lack of police force and concerns from advisory group GEMS.

Now, the festival has announced that, sadly, the event will not go on as hoped.

“It is with heavy heart that our organization must announce that the 16th edition of Tomorrowland Belgium cannot take place in 2021. The entire team fought till the end and did everything in its powers to write a new chapter in the history of Tomorrowland.”

However, Tomorrowland’s stunning Around The World virtual event is just around the corner, July 16 & 17, featuring dozens of stellar artists ready to bring the epic festival vibes to life in another world. Tickets are still available.

What artists were the “Lockdown Winners” on Spotify?

With touring and live events at a standstill from April 2020 to April 2021, both musicians and audiences turned to streaming. Music research and analytics platform Viberate looked into the numbers to pinpoint the artists who made the most of the situation on Spotify.

The report ranks the five most successful artists in each of the six most listened-to genres. In electronic, the top 5 artists were Ben Böhmer (Germany), Yves Tumor (USA), INZO (USA), ARTBAT (Ukraine), and Unknown Brain (UK). The German deep house artist beat others with a 143% followers’ increase, thanks to his 2020 releases “Cappadocia” and “Moments” that gained over 18M streams.

Viberate’s report also determined that Spotify playlists and TikTok were hugely influential. Each top-performing artist’s tracks either went viral on TikTok at some point during lockdown or were included in an influential playlist. The report also shows that Pop was the most popular genre on Spotify, followed by Hip Hop, Latin, Rock, R&B, and Electronic.

Viberate specifically looked at the fastest-growing fanbase among the top 1K Spotify artists in each genre from the period of April 2020 – April 2021. Artists eligible in the study had to have at least 10K Spotify followers and 100K monthly listeners. Unfortunately, this did exclude a lot of rising artists who might not already have some degree of notoriety, whose profiles received more visits and listens following a shout out from a peer or a spectacular set at any of the digital festivals held during COVID.

For instance, Megan Thee Stallion was the #2 most-grown artist in hip hop, thanks in large part to TikTok, which saw her rise 2.9M followers in one year. And though she has 30 million more monthly listeners than the #1 most-grown artist in hip hop, J.I the Prince of N.Y took the top spot because of his percentage increase in followers was greater (91K to 475K, a 426% increase compared to MTS’s 328% increase, 900K to 3.8M).

Viberate also found that “sad playlists” were instrumental in the rise of artists during COVID, which… is somewhat expected. That being said, pop and hip hop were shown to have the most “solid” fanbases and were “the most successful in converting listeners into long-term followers.” The same report found that electronic muisc seemed to be the most “divided” in delivering either one-time hits or new household names.

It’s important to remember, even after looking at this report and the data it presents, that Spotify is of course not the be-all end-all of evaluating an artist’s worth or reach. Though these artists might have “made the most” of Spotify, hundreds if not thousands of others saw significant growth on this platform or elsewhere during the pandemic. And even if they didn’t, that’s okay too. Everyone’s mental health was affected and if an artist saw a decrease in followers/listeners but managed to maintain a healthy mental state, that’s also a win in our book.

Steve Aoki, GATTÜSO, and Aukoustics Reimagine R.E.M.’s Classic “Losing My Religion” ft. MKLA

Repurposing old rock classics for EDM covers and remixes has become oddly common over the past couple of years — maybe it’s a lack of original ideas, maybe it’s an appeal to an older audience, maybe the artist has a true appreciation for the classics. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. This week, Steve Aoki, GATTÜSO, and Aukoustics reimagine R.E.M.’s classic “Losing My Religion” with help from MKLA.

“Losing My Religion” is, by far, R.E.M.’s biggest song, outstreaming their next biggest song by three times on Spotify. And it’s for good reason. The melancholy tone of the song paired with the comparatively sparse lyrics present a wonderful depiction of, well, losing your religion.

And while this group of producers might have succeeded in creating a dancefloor anthem for the current era (whether they did or not is entirely subjective), it’s hard to deny that they lose a lot of the meaning of the song in the recreation.

“Losing My Religion is my favorite of all R.E.M. songs, and I loved them growing up as a kid,” Steve Aoki shares. “It was time to bring it back and make a 2021 version for the dancefloor that people wouldn’t expect. We flipped it and made it special.”

GATTÜSO adds, “Steve had a clear vision for how it would need to be sculpted and I learned a lot in the process. It’s great to see this plan come together after a lot of work, and I’m excited for everyone to hear it.”

Although SvD has remixed Armin in the past, it’s genuinely shocking that these two haven’t previously collaborated.

“Jonson’s Play” opens with a four-four beat, a droning synth note hovering in the background, and a dark, brooding feeling to open the track. Download Pilot Festival Takes Place in UK with No Masks or Social Distancing

Download Festival was recently held in the UK as a pilot event with no masks or social distancing required — and it reportedly went off without a hitch.

Over the weekend, Download welcomed rock and metal fans back to Donington Park as the UK’s first major camping festival since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event drastically slashed capacity to 10,000 people versus the 111,000 attendees recorded in 2019.

Prior to the event, Download shared:

Everybody on site will have taken a lateral flow test before entry and received a negative result and will have taken a PCR test too. That means you’ll be able to mosh, dance, hug your fellow Downloaders, and rock out without a mask or social distancing. Frankly, we can’t think of anything that sounds more awesome after 15 months away from our hallowed ground.

The organizer of Download Festival said the pilot was “100% evidence” that large-scale events can indeed take place safely amid the pandemic. Organizers also praised attendees for their compliance with testing requirements.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, said: “In fairness, the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) are on board with the message which is that these things can happen and they can happen safely.”

The pilot festival is one of many events to generate COVID-19 related data in order to help the UK government make decisions on social distancing and other restrictions moving forward.

More details on the study here.

A look back at an EPIC Sunday at Download Pilot!

Thank you for being a part of something incredible and playing your part to help reopen live music! #DownloadPilot pic.twitter.com/j8gdyHQlhP
