Steve Aoki Designed a $3,000 Bulgari Watch Made for Raves

Steve Aoki is undoubtedly one of the busiest people in dance music. Before COVID, he was racking up 200+ shows a year, runs a label, has a charity, hell he even opened up his own pizza joint. His entrepreneurial spirit never seems to be quenched, and now he’s helped design a new watch “made for raves” in collaboration with Bulgari.

As Bloomberg points out in their interview with Aoki, Bulgari and EDM don’t necessarily belong in the same sentence, and certainly not at $3,050. That being said, there will always be people who appreciate the finer things in life, and who also love to get sweaty at shows. The signature feature of the watch, says Bloomberg, is a Superluminova dial that lights up, “perfect for waving around at your next festival in lieu of a glow stick.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Aoki said, “Bulgari is art. With certain brands, they get to the point of a legacy where they just never depreciate. I’m a collector; I collect physical art and I’m a NFT guy. Bulgari just has that premium. It goes up in value and it has a history and culture. And it takes a lot of time, and being masters of your work, to get there. They’re just so high caliber, it’s such an honor to be able to work with them at this level.”

You can visit bulgari.com and sign up to be notified when the watch is available.

Spotify Editors Release “State of Dance Music” Predictions For This Year

Though platforms like SoundCloud, Audius, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and others exist, it’s not unreasonable to say that Spotify dominates dance music on streaming platforms (unlike, say, 6 years ago when SoundCloud was king). Playlists like mint, Dance Rising, Hype, Bass Arcade, and more constantly feature the newest and best electronic music, but with 2020 being such a tumultuous year for everyone, how will 2021 fare?

For the Record spoke to the dance global curation group (GCG), a team of editors who, as the name suggests, curate Spotify’s playlists, about the trends they’re seeing and some of their predictions for the genre this year.

Like a lot of other industries whose productions were upended during the pandemic, the dance GCG team predicts that there’s going to be a definite rise in dance music this year. “As listeners head back to the clubs and producers are able to tour again, expect even more noise.”

Likewise, there’s going to be a rise in underground and bedroom producers. As we head out of the pandemic, people’s tastes have changed — without live shows to go to, though people’s favorite artists might have continued to play live streams, there was an intense demand to find artists who lived in the “elsewhere” and put out creative and long-lasting music.

Slap house, covers of classic songs from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, or even more recent, are also becoming more popular, despite some intense disapproval from select groups. Think Kygo’s cover of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” with Tina Turner, Purity Ring’s “Better Off Alone” from Alice Deejay, or Don Diablo covering “Mr. Brightside” from The Killers.

The line between pop and dance is also becoming ever smaller. Skrillex, Zedd, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, and more are just some of the big names in dance music who are helping to blur the line, teaming up with pop artists or putting out pop hits themselves. Of course, as we previously mentioned, the rise in the underground is happening simultaneously, so don’t worry about your favorite genre disappearing any time soon.

England On Pace to End COVID-19 Restrictions by July 19

England is moving toward fully reopening nightclubs and venues.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced this week that the country will soon move to the next stage of reopening, after being delayed from June 21st. Effective July 19th, mask wearing, social distancing, and restrictions on gatherings will be lifted — as long as stage four is confirmed on July 12th.

However, Johnson remarked, “I want to stress from the outset that this pandemic is far from over and it will certainly not be over by [July] 19th. We must reconcile ourselves sadly to more deaths from COVID.”

If everything goes according to plan, that means clubs and festivals in England will be able to move forward with no proof of vaccination required, unless otherwise decided upon by the venue.

The Delta variant sparks a particular concern for the UK, but Johnson is for a Summer reopening versus the Fall. Attendees are still encouraged to remain cautious and take personal responsibility to help suppress the spread of COVID-19.

Diplo being sued by a woman who claims he coerced her into performing oral sex

A woman is suing Diplo for allegedly coercing her into performing oral sex on him, and filming it. According to court documents, the woman “claims she was invited back to Diplo’s after-party following one of his Vegas concerts at the Wynn in 2019, which she says she attended with friends, already intoxicated from drinking at the show.”

“Once there, she says Diplo gave her and everyone else more weed and alcohol, which they accepted. She claims Diplo eventually invited her to his personal room, and his security team started kicking out everyone else, including a male friend, [whom] the bodyguards allegedly punched in the face when he refused to leave without her.”

Diplo allegedly told the woman she couldn’t leave until she performed oral sex. After realizing the situation, the woman acquiesced and Diplo allegedly filmed the encounter without her consent.

Diplo’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, calls the whole suit “completely outrageous.”

Freedman says, “This complaint is […] wildly untrue and yet also entirely predictable, given that it simply repeats the exact same claim already made by the plaintiff’s friend Shelly Auguste, an individual who has been harassing Mr. Pentz and his family for more than a year and already has repeatedly violated the restraining order issued against her.”

Diplo sued Shelly Auguste earlier this year for stalking, trespassing and distribution of private materials aka revenge porn after she first sued him for sexual battery.

Freedman continues, “We have irrefutable evidence that this is a completely meritless claim and we will be providing it to a court as quickly as we possibly can to put an end to this shakedown by Ms. Auguste and her accomplices once and for all.”

World’s Best Music To Be Preserved In “Doomsday Vault” In Norway For 1,000 Years

On an island just north of Norway, there exists a doomsday vault containing more than 930,000 varieties of food crops in the event of a global catastrophe. Now, on that same island, there will exist a vault containing the world’s best music.

The vault is being created by Elire Management Group, in collaboration with International Music Council, and would store “master-quality digital copies” buried deep underground to withstand whatever might happen in the future, ensuring the longevity of some of the world’s greatest musicians for generations and generations to come.

Speaking to Billboard about the project, the managing director of The Global Music Vault, Luke Jenkinson, said: “We want to preserve the music that has shaped us as human beings and shaped our nations.”

Jenkinson continued, “we don’t want to just protect a certain genre and certain era. We want the nations and regions of the world to curate what music gets deposited.”

The music will be able to be accessed via “high-density QR codes” that will last for 1,000 years.

Writes Mixmag, “The company has hopes to finish building the vault by 2022. The first deposit will focus on the early recordings of music from Indigenous people, later followed by more modern recordings.”

Bid for 24-Hour Nightlife Districts in NYC Follows Up Similar Proposal in Chicago

24-hour nightlife districts? Yes, please!

The NYC Office for Nightlife is fighting for this change, which would extend hours well past the standard 4 AM curfew. The proposal comes as part of a bid to help NYC nightlife thrive post-COVID, after over a year spent in lockdown.

Previously, 24-hour models like this have been successfully implemented in Berlin and Amsterdam. Bringing this concept to the US would certainly liven up the dance music scene for locals and tourists alike.

Senior Executive of NYC Office for Nightlife, Ariel Palitz, explains to WCBS:

Everything is on the table right now. We are recommending this as a pilot to identify areas where 24-hour use might be appropriate; new licenses that are committed to hosting community programming in exchange for this allowance in certain areas have proved wildly successful.

Earlier this year, Chicago City Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa proposed a similar idea for Chicago, the birthplace of house music. Taking the concept a step further, his concept includes workshops and classes to accompany the all-nighters. More on this below.

House music was born in Chicago. I’ve met many tourists who are shocked to learn Chicago has no late-night House music clubs. We should consider allowing two 24-hour nightclubs (one downtown/northside, one southside) to tap into the international market for Chicago House music.

Wax Motif Drops Vibey Music Video For His Latest Hedonistic Single, “Thrills” ft. Jaxon Rose

Fresh off his rave-ready collab, “Need You” alongside Russian duo Phlegmatic Dogs, Aussie sensation Wax Motif dropped the next release pulled from his highly anticipated artist album back in June. He linked up with singer and guitarist of the four-piece Sunrose band, Jaxon Rose, on “Thrills,” a low-slung R&B-flecked house number penned about chasing highs in a hedonistic Hollywood fashion.

Today, the music video dropped, reflecting a similar hedonistic high with a theme of doing the most to chase the thrill, produced and directed by Sir John.

“The song always gives me that LA Downtown late-night ‘going home from a party’ feel, and at the time, my life felt really transitional like that, lots of partying, meeting new people and going new places,” says Wax Motif. “On the album, it’s one of the tracks that feels like an important piece of my whole story so far and always makes me feel like it’s my first night out clubbing in Hollywood again.”
